My parents recently got back from a trip to Ireland where they fell in love with
Smithwick's Irish Ale. My dad was excited when he found the beer at
a local market, but he noticed a distinct difference in the taste, claiming that the American-bought Smithwick's was watery and not as creamy or flavorful as its Irish counterpart.
His remarks got me thinking about foods we enjoy on vacation.

Scientists in Philadelphia have discovered that mice can taste calcium. Since humans and rodents share many of the same genes, the human tongue should taste calcium as well. For centuries the four basic tastes were sweet, sour, bitter, and salty.

Umami
Discovered 100 years ago by a Japanese scientist, umami is believed to be a fifth taste sensation. The four basic tastes are sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. Umami is considered to be savory.

These vids of
babies tasting lemons never get old. You'd think Emma here was sampling a fine wine, the way she savors this tasting. She takes an initial nibble, inspects the slice, goes in for another taste, and then gnaws on it a bit.

Of course we all want our significant others to think we look good, but when it comes to our
hair, makeup, and clothing choices, is he always in mind? Women's fashion is a funny thing because a lot of the time, trends are meant for other women's approval, not men's. Sometimes they just don't get it, or they plain and simply don't like it.

Irish stew is a great dish to serve at a
St. Patrick's Day dinner party. In general, stews make wonderful dinner party fare because they're a one-pot meal that must be made in advance.

Does baby like or not like? That is the question. This poor fella can't make sense of this pear concoction.

My elegant
Christmas dinner calls for equally-sophisticated cocktails. I'll have distinct wine pairings for each course and one festive signature cocktail to get the night started right.
With the
oysters and crab crostini, pour a sparkling Prosecco; it's a lovely and affordable varietal.

There's something oddly amusing about
babies tasting new foods for the first time. Watch this little guy pucker up after sucking on a lemon, and just when you think he'll return to chewing on a plastic lid instead, he goes in for another lick of lemon. Is this boy trying to torture himself?

Our five senses help up experience, understand, delight, and survive in this world. We appreciate all five of them for different reasons, but I want to know...
