Casa Quickie: Turn Off the Tap!

Did you know that running the bathroom tap for only two minutes while brushing your teeth can waste more than two gallons of water? If you run water for your morning and night-time toothbrushing, as well as for shaving, this can really add up. To get into the habit of turning off the tap, leave an inspirational photo of a lake or the ocean tucked into your bathroom mirror, to help you remember the necessity of conserving water. If you get into this habit, you can save up to 8,540 gallons of water!

I always turn it off in the past but in our new townhouse I have a new problem. Our bathroom is on the third floor, and our waterheater is in the garage on the first floor. So when I wash my face, it takes 1-2 minutes for the water to warm up. This is such a waste of water and I dont know what to do about it!?

I have a similar problem to Silly Girl. When I want COLD water, it comes past the water heater, I guess, because it starts getting hot and I have to WASTE all the hot water that was in the lines before I get cold water.

It's SO wasteful to leave it running when you're brushing your teeth! I yell at my hubby about this all the time!

Another thing to think about, is to keep the water you're putting down pure. Don't put any medications down your drain or in your toilet. It's not something they filter out, and it's not so great. So, keep it in mind!

If you have to wait for the water to heat/cool down, I try to catch the water and use it for other things - like watering the plants or giving my cats water. Makes me feel less wasteful then just watching the water flow.
